The Islamic state is a wealthy organization which has an annual budget estimated at about 2 billion dollars. There are three main sources of money production:
- First, the I S earns money thanks to plunders, taxes and rackets. Indeed it taxes the populations of his claimed territory; in particular the state employees paid by Bagdad and Damascus authorities. Moreover, in Mosul, it stole the money of the central bank in June 2014. The I S also kept the agricultural plains in Manbij and in Rakka in order to sell cotton and cereals.
- Then, the second source of money came from the smuggling. On the one hand, the oil smuggling thanks to the oil fields in the East of Syria and in the North of Iraq. On the other hand, the plunder of antiquities. Both are sold by smuggling on the Turkish black market.
Furthermore, the I S kidnaps heretics for ransoms and sells enslaved populations, particularly women.
- Finally, jihad gives them another source of money. Indeed they come from 110 countries, most from muslim countries but also from Russia and Europe. In June 2015, the French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said that 860 French people had joined Islamic rows in Syria.
